If your road trip through South Carolina includes major destinations like Myrtle Beach, Charleston, Hilton Head or Greenville, don’t just drive through, make a meaningful stop in Santee Cooper Country. Our happy home is full of lakeside charm, outdoor recreation and family-friendly attractions. It’s an ideal place to stretch your legs, explore and create new memories before heading back to the highway. Here are five reasons to pull over and enjoy the best of what Santee Cooper Country has to offer:
- Explore the Great Outdoors at Santee State Park
Nestled on the edge of Lake Marion, Santee State Park offers the kind of quiet natural beauty that road trips were made for. You can take a walk or bike ride through forested trails, fish right off the pier or even stay the night in unique cabins that hover over the lake. It’s peaceful, affordable and just wild enough to make kids and grown-ups alike feel like explorers.
- Cast a Line in Lake Marion
Lake Marion is a destination in its own right for anglers, boaters and water-loving families. It’s the largest lake in South Carolina and known for plentiful catches, everything from catfish and crappie to largemouth bass. Whether you bring your own gear or hire a local fishing guide, the experience is more than just catching fish—it’s about slowing down and soaking up the South Carolina outdoors.
- Swamp Fox Murals
History buffs won’t want to miss Clarendon County’s Swamp Fox Murals—a must-see stop in Santee Cooper Country. Scattered across the county, 18 murals bring the Southern Campaign of the Revolutionary War to life, honoring Gen. Francis Marion, the legendary “Swamp Fox.” One standout mural in Manning marks the spot where British Gen. Tarleton famously gave up a 26-mile chase, declaring Marion too cunning to catch. It’s a unique, artistic way to step into South Carolina’s revolutionary past.
- Play a Round of Golf Without the Crowds- needs specific
If your idea of relaxation includes time on the green, Santee Cooper Country delivers. With several well-maintained public courses, this area is a golfer’s hidden paradise. From The Santee National Golf Club, to the Lake Marion Golf Course and Wyboo Golf Club, there’s endless ways to practice your swing! The fairways are scenic, tee times are easy to book and local accommodations even offer stay-and-play packages, making it simple to squeeze in a round (or two) on your way to the coast.
- Eutaw Springs Battlesite
Step into the past at the Eutaw Springs Battlesite. Nestled near Lake Marion, this quiet spot was the stage for South Carolina’s last Revolutionary War battle in 1781, where over 4,000 troops clashed in sweltering heat and set the stage for the British surrender at Yorktown. After soaking up some history, refuel just 10 minutes away at Sweatman’s Barbeque in Holly Hill—famous for its whole-hog BBQ and praised by Southern Living and Garden & Gun. Before you call it a day, swing by the tomb of Gen. Francis Marion in Pineville, then kick back in a waterfront cabin at Santee State Park. History, BBQ and lake views? That’s a pretty perfect road trip combo to us.
Why Make the Stop?
Santee Cooper Country is more than a pit stop, it’s a destination filled with quiet adventure and Southern character. It’s an ideal break from highway fatigue, offering something for every age and interest. Whether you’re chasing a fish, a bird or just a fresh view, Santee Cooper Country delivers the kind of authentic South Carolina experience that road trips are all about.
